“You are not emotionally intelligent and we have a problem”
Imagine yourself on a sunny, late-September Friday afternoon. You’re a sales rep and you’re crushing your numbers. You think you have great relationships with your peers and customers. You enter a boardroom to meet your manager, thinking that you’re about to be told that you’re going to be promoted. Instead, your manager says:
“DAVID, YOU ARE NOT EMOTIONALLY INTELLIGENT AND WE HAVE A PROBLEM.”
That was me in 2016. An overconfident, naive employee who had no idea how others were perceiving him. It was a shock to my system, my personal pride and my professional reality.
I was angry that Friday afternoon. Angry that this manager had it in for me. Angry that nobody ever shared this feedback with me in the past. Angry that everything I worked for was about to disappear because one person seemed to value emotional intelligence more than sales numbers.
When I got home, my wife said something to me that changed my life forever.
“CONSIDER THIS THE GREATEST GIFT YOU EVER RECEIVED. THE GIFT OF FEEDBACK AND THE OPPORTUNITY TO IMPROVE YOURSELF.”
I made two promises to myself that day. Not only would nobody ever feel the need to have a conversation like that with me ever again, but I promised myself to share my story with anyone who would listen. My purpose is to ensure that nobody ever has to have a conversation like I did.
The EQ Improved project began that Friday afternoon and my workshops have been shared and delivered to more than three thousand professionals and students across multiple organizations. My approach to Emotional Intelligence training is based on learning through experiences. Theory itself is not enough. Each workshop is customized for your team’s needs, with an emphasis on practical exercises, discussion and accountability. Managers will also exit these trainings with actionable steps to reward EQ development.
I live in Oakville, Ontario with my wife Leora and our dogs Brella and Gilligan. I’m a proud employee of Google Canada.
